FWE Graduate Student Travel Awards

    Overview

The Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology can offer a limited number of graduate student travel awards each year. The Forestry Travel Awards are provided through an annual gift to the UW Foundation. The Wildlife Ecology travel awards are from the Henry L Russell Memorial Fund managed by the UW Trust Funds. Both programs also have access to Graduate Student Success Competition (GSSC) funds.

To ensure the equitable distribution and long-term stewardship of our graduate travel awards, the Chair has developed the following guidance:

    • $500 – National or international meeting
    • $300 – In-state conference
    • Not to exceed $300 – Non-presentation conference travel*

*Must directly benefit UW. Department’s discretion to award.

    • Priority is for those presenting scientific results associated with degree work.
    • Annual target spending per program = $2,500
    • Maximum total award per degree = $500; possible maximum of $1,000 if student pursues MS and PhD.
    • Award amounts may be flexible depending on investment returns/budgets and student demand.
    • Not all who apply may be awarded based on available funds and student demand.
    • First come, first serve is the general policy followed.
    • Travel that falls within the 90-day reimbursement window is eligible for consideration.

    Policy

The process for updating or changing policy is the Chair and/or Graduate Academic Affairs Committee’s responsibility.

Guidance was developed to inform decisions related to distribution of the graduate travel awards. No departmentally approved policy exists, though one could be created. History of changes: Current guidance was slightly revised when Rickenbach became Chair in 2016.
